ANDERSON, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan baseball rallied but couldn't upend Anderson on Wednesday night in nonconference action. The Trojans pulled out a 7-5 win, scoring two runs in the sixth to earn the victory.
Anderson jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three as the Trojans scored twice in the second and three times in the third. Nick Bernardo drove in one with a triple and scored on a wild pitch for AU. In the third Brett Cash hit a two-run homer before Bernardo drove in another later in the frame.
The Warriors couldn't manage a hit until the fifth when they had three. The first coming off the bat of Daniel Coleman as the senior belted his second homer of the season, a two-run shot to left after John Garrett led off the inning with a walk. That hit brought the Warriors to within 5-2. SWU left two on in the inning and left five on through five.
In the sixth the Warriors rallied with two outs to tie the game at 5-5. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Garrett walked to start the rally. Coleman followed with a single and after an error allowed Drew Carson to reach to load the bases, Josh Shimp came through. The freshman singled through the left side to score two, his second hit of the game. The tying run scored as Justin Brew reached on another error and the game was tied at 5-5.
The tie was short lived as the Trojans answered the Warriors charge with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. LJ Newman hit a two-run homer after Steven Cooper walked with two outs as AU went back on top.
The Warriors were held without a hit in the finally three innings despite putting the tying run on base in the 9th. Michael Skelly retired the first two batters in the final inning before issuing a free pass to Dan Williams and Julio Lara. Skelly got Johnny Ponder to fly out to end the game and pick up his third save of the year.
Andrew Howard earned his second start of the season for the Warriors, pitching 4.0 innings allowing seven hits and five runs. He walked three and struck out two in the no-decision. Mike Batten took the loss in relief, giving up the homer to Newman in an otherwise solid three innings of work. The freshman struck out four in three innings, allowing just two runs, one walk and two hits. He dropped to 0-3 on the year.
Austin Smith picked up the win in relief for Anderson to improve to 2-0 on the year. Smith pitched just one inning and allowed three unearned runs and three hits striking out two. Andrew Dill got the started and struck out eight in five innings. The Trojans staff struck out 14 in the game.
The Warriors and Trojans are scheduled to meet three more times this year with the next meeting set for next Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Central. SWU is scheduled to return to the field on Friday to start a three-game set with Erskine. First pitch for Friday is set for 6 p.m.
