CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan dropped both games on Saturday to the No. 12 Mount Olive Trojans as UMO finished off a three-game sweep of the Warriors.
Southern Wesleyan dropped the doubleheader opener 9-5 before falling in the nightcap 9-1. SWU is back in action on Tuesday as they hit the road for the first time this season, travelling to Truett-McConnell for a 2 p.m. start.
Game One
The Trojans scored five times in the first as they went on to win 9-5. SWU came back to score three in the fifth before the Trojans answered with three of their own in the top of the sixth.
Errors caused most of the damage for the Warriors as four runs for the Trojans in the first inning were unearned thanks to a dropped fly ball in left field. UMO sent nine batters to the plate in that inning, picking up three hits including a two-run triple from Joe Koehler.
The Warriors finally broke through against Kodi Whitley in the fifth as Drew Carson singled home a run as did Jason Moldenhauer and Josh Shimp. SWU added a run in the eighth as Daniel Williams scored on a passed ball. In the ninth Carson tripled in another run, finishing with three hits and two RBI.
Andrew Howard pitched 4.0 innings in relief of Hamilton Hartsell. Howard allowed just four hits and two runs while striking out three and walking one. Hartsell took the loss to fall to 0-3 after 5.0 innings of work. Only one of his seven runs allowed were earned as the Warriors committed four errors in the game.
Game Two
The Warriors collected just one hit in the first three innings and had only six in the seven inning finale, losing 9-1. SWU scored their lone run in the sixth as Josh Shimp led off the inning with a double to deep center. Two batters later Johnny Ponder grounded out to score Shimp. Shimp finished the game with three hits.
Tyler Rio took the loss for the Warriors to fall to 0-2 on the season. Rio allowed seven hits and six runs, five earned, in 4.0 innings. He struck out four and walked four. Jordan Finster struck out five in two innings of relief, allowing just one walk.
Derek Justice got the win for the Trojans, pitching six innings allowing five hits and one run. He walked three and struck out three.
