CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan scored nine in the seventh as the Warriors rallied for a 13-10 win over Francis Marion in game one of a three game weekend set. Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
The Warriors sent 13 to the plate in the seventh, scoring nine runs on five hits, three walks and a hit batter. The first big blow came from Julio Lara as he singled to right with the bases loaded to score Michael Hyman. After Ponder walked to force in Jason Moldenhauer, the Warriors were given a gift.
Matt Costa singled to right to score Daniel Williams but the ball scooted through the legs of right fielder Zac Lenns allowing Ponder and Lara to both score. Costa advanced to third on the play. After a pitching change Daniel Coleman walked and was followed by another pitching change.
John Garrett laid down a perfect suicide squeeze as Costa scored and tied the game at 10-10. Hyman reached base for the second time in the inning as he was plunked to load the bases again. After a fly out, a wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score as Coleman crossed the plate. Josh Shimp knocked in two more with a single up the middle to give the Warriors a 13-10 advantage.
Jordan Finster pitched the final two innings allowing just one hit and striking out two to pick up his first save of the season. Roth Matthews picked up his first career win with a two-inning relief appearance, allowing three hits and one run.
The Patriots took a commanding 9-3 lead with a seven-run fifth. The Warriors gave up four unearned runs in the inning as SWU committed three errors. FMU collected six hits in the inning, one a two-run homer from J.D. Crowe. Zach Callahan also doubled in two.
The Warriors held a 3-2 lead after three, scoring three times in the third as Shimp doubled in two and Hyman singled home John Garrett. Garret reached on a three-base error from the right fielder Lenns who dropped a fly ball near the foul line.
Shimp finished the day with three hits and four RBI. Hyman also had a multi-hit game with a pair of singles. He also stole three bases and scored three times. Jason Moldenhauer doubled and scored twice. Garrett also scored two times.
Matt Buss got the start for the Warriors and was knocked out in the seven-run fifth. The lefty allowed eight hits and eight runs, but only four earned. He walked five and struck out two. FMU also started a lefty as Matt Kelley lasted six innings, striking out eight. Kelley allowed six hits, four runs, three eanred and walked two.
