Warriors Take Down Nighthawks 6-3

CENTRAL, S.C. – Andrew Howard allowed two hits in five innings of relief as Southern Wesleyan picked up a 6-3 win over North Georgia on Tuesday evening.

The Warriors scored four times in the second as Trevor Walker tripled in two and then scored on the play as the relay throw to third was off line and skipped away. Johnny Ponder led off the inning with a single to center. After Matt costa was hit by a pitch, Daniel Coleman laid down a sac bunt and reached first on the play as a throw from pitcher Logan Burt was high. Ponder scored on the play to make it a 3-2 UNG lead. Walker was the next batter and drilled a ball to the right-center gap for the two RBI triple.

SWU got on the board in the first as Daniel Williams delivered a two-out single up the middle to score Jason Moldenhauer who walked earlier in the inning.

The Nighthawks scored all their runs in the second as they piled up three hits and two walks. Joey Cecere singled in a pair and Steven Tomlinson knocked in one with a single. Cameron Crawford also doubled in the inning.

The Warriors added an insurance run in the seventh as Josh Shimp provided a bases loaded single to left to score Walker.

Williams and Michael Hyman each had two hits for the Warriors as the team picked up seven in the game. The Nighthaws had six hits led by Tomlinson's two. UNG committed four errors in the game, leading to two unearned runs for the Warriors.

Howard came out of the bullpen to pitch five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five. He picked up the win to improve to 1-0. Mike Batten pitched the first four innings allowing just four hits and striking out four, but the freshman walked seven.

Logan Burt (0-1) took the loss for North Georgia after three innings of three hit, five run ball. Four of those runs were earned. Burt walked two and struck out three. Chris Cobb and Phillip Taylor each struck out four out of the bullpen.

The Warriors will travel to North Georgia later on this season in March. SWU will host Francis Marion in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
