Box Score GAFFNEY, S.C. – Limestone's Chad Balderman blasted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to thwart the Warriors comeback bid, lifting the Saints to an 8-7 win.
The Warriors fell behind early as Limestone put up five runs in the second, four of which were unearned after an error kept the inning alive. The Saints did hit three doubles in the inning but a costly error with two outs allowed one run to score and allowed the Saints to keep batting, eventually coming up with two of those three doubles.
The Warriors came back with three runs in the third as Jonny Ponder provided a sacrifice fly and Zack Oberlies blasted his second home run of the game, a two run shot that also score Julio Lara. Oberlies also went deep in the second inning, a solo bomb and his first of the season. He had three of the team's eight hits in the game.
Limestone added another run in the third, another unearned run after another one of their four errors in the game, to make the score 6-4 in favor of the Saints. Julio Lara knocked in a run in the fourth with a double to cut the deficit to one at 6-5.
SWU finally tied the game at 7-7 in the seventh as Tyler Bice brought home Andrew Howard with an RBI single. In the sixth it was Matt Arant scoring Mike Hyman with a groundout to close the gap to one. All that set up Balderman for his heroics.
J.J. Julian made the start on the mound for the Warriors and was the victim of bad defense as five of the six runs charged to him were unearned. Julian walked five and struck out three over 2.2 innings of work before giving way to Tim O'Callaghan. O'Callaghan pitched the rest of the way, 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits and two runs, one earned but still took the loss. He struck out two and walked four. Limestone used nine pitchers, one an inning, as Caleb Shelley took the win.
The Warriors will travel to New Orleans to battle Loyola (La.) in a three-game SSAC series. Two games are scheduled for Friday with the series finale slated for Saturday.
