Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan gave up four runs in the ninth as Anderson came from behind to win 5-1 on Wednesday night at Fluor Field at the West End, home of the Greenville Drive.
The Warriors (9-13) scored first, in the fifth as Joe Henderson picked up the first hit of the game for the Warriors off of David Thompson. That single into left-center scored Daniel Williams who walked earlier in the inning. Henderson drove in another run in the ninth with a double into the right-center gap to score Luke Hostetler.
SWU finished with just three hits, Mike Hyman picking up the other hit, and really struggled against AU starter David Thompson. Thompson struck out eight in seven innings of work, allowing just one hit that didn't come until the fifth. Relievers J.T. Trujillo picked up the win with 1.1 innings of work allowing just one hit. Trujillo earned the win to improve to 1-3 on the season.
J.J. Julian pitched well for the Warriors, allowing just six hits and no runs in 4.1 innings of work. Julian gave way to Jamie Eckstein in the fifth and Eckstein pitched out of a jam after two errors put two on for the Trojans with just one out. Eckstein got Jonathan Zalud to bounce into a 1-5-3 double play to end the threat and escape the jam.
The Warriors were pitching out of jams all night long as Anderson left 13 runners on base. Anderson finally broke through with the tying run in the seventh off of Eckstein. Ben Pendleton led off the inning with one of his three hits. After a fielder's choice, Steven Cooper roped a triple into right-center field to score Brett Cash for the tying run.
Justin Adams came on for the Warriors in the eighth and somehow escaped without giving up a run. Adams allowed the first two runners to reach via a base hit. After a wild pitch sent those runners to second and third a fly out to Mike Hyman in center seemingly was going to bring the go-ahead run across for Anderson but the runner didn't tag. Adams got two more fly outs to shallow center to escape the jam.
In the ninth Adams wasn't so lucky. After two groundouts to start the inning Cooper singled and was followed by a walk to Nathan Galliford. Garrett Bernardo was hit by an Adams pitch to load the bases. Paul Como laced a double into the left field corner to score two and Adams was lifted for Jordan Finster. Anderson added two more runs to go ahead 5-1. The Warriors scored one in the bottom on the inning to make the final count 5-2.
Southern Wesleyan will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday, hosting Martin Methodist for a three-game SSAC set. Saturday's double-header will begin at 1 p.m. at The Con and Sunday's single game will start at 2:30 p.m.
