Errors too much to overcome as Warriors fall to Saints 6-5

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – A pair of errors proved to be the difference as the Warriors fell to Limestone 6-5 in nonconference action on Wednesday night.

The Warriors fall to 10-16 overall while the Saints improved to 8-15.  Kyle Cliff (1-2) was the winner after pitching six innings of three-hit ball.  After getting into trouble early he settled in, allowing just six hits.  Jordan Finster (2-2) took the loss as he was unable to get an out in the fourth when Limestone put up five runs to take a 5-3 lead.  Caleb Shelley earned the save with a perfect 1.1 innings of work.

Errors were a big story in this game as SWU committed three.  In the fourth with the bases loaded Chris Scura knocked in two with a single to left.  The ball scooted past left fielder Matt Arant and rolled all the way to the wall as the runner at first and Scura came around to score.  One pitcher and three hits later the Saints added another run.

Another error in the seventh led to an insurance run that proved to be the difference.  A fly ball off the bat of Avi Ahlzadeh popped out of the glove of Tyler Lollis in right allowed Ahlzadeh to reach.  After Ahlzadeh stole second, he scored on a single up the middle from K.J. McAllister.

The Warriors scored first, continuing their success in the first inning, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first.  Cliff walked the first four batters of the game to force in a run and Julio Lara knocked in the second with a sacrifice fly.  In the third the Warriors scored again as Lara singled in Daniel Williams who walked to lead off the inning.  Williams walked three times in the game and Lara collected three hits including a double in the seventh.  Luke Hostetler also picked up three hits along with a double as the Warriors collected eight hits.

SWU will get a shot at Limestone again later in the season as the Warriors head to Gaffney on April 9.  The Warriors will have a six-game road swing beginning this weekend at SSAC newcomer Bethel (Tenn.) for a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m.  The series concludes on Saturday with a single game at 2 p.m.
