CENTRAL, S.C. – The offense came alive for Southern Wesleyan as the Warriors beat Toccoa Falls 10-0 in game one of a three-game series on Friday night. The two teams will meet for a double-header on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
The Warriors (3-1) pounded out 11 hits as three players collected at least two hits. SWU got the scoring started early, plating a run in the first. Michael Hyman led off the inning with a single to center and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Tyler Bice brought Hyman home with a sacrifice fly.
The game stayed close at 1-0 until the Warriors added three runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth. In the fourth Joe Henderson doubled to put runners at second and third. Tyler Lollis brought Stephen Wyatt home with a sacrifice fly. Back-to-back singles by Johnny Ponder and Luke Hostetler and a walk to Julio Lara loaded the bases for J.J. Julian. Julian followed with a single to right-center that scored two.
In the sixth the Warriors knocked out starting pitcher Dylan Charles after charging three more runs to the lefty. Tyler Lollis led off the inning with a double down the left field line and was brought home by Hostetler's single to left. Hostetler finished the game with two hits and two runs scored. The runs didn't stop there as new pitcher Clay Ogle hit a batter with the bases loaded and Stephen Wyatt knocked in a pair with a single to left-center.
The Warriors added two more in the eighth as a pair of defensive miscues gave SWU two runs without the benefit of a hit in the inning.
Starting pitcher Matt Craig (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with seven innings of shutout baseball. The lefty allowed just four hits and walked one, striking out four. Jamie Eckstein pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit in his first appearance of the season.
