CENTRAL, S.C. – A scoreless regulation turned in favor of Erskine halfway through the first overtime period on Thursday as the Flying Fleet defeated Southern Wesleyan 1-0 on a chilly night at Childs Field.
The Warriors created several solid chances in the final 10 minutes starting with Leah Moorefield's leaping header attempt off a corner kick in the 81st minute. Moorefield's attempt was sent just north of the crossbar. Just minutes later Grace Taylor had a shot one-on-one with the keeper and pushed the ball wide.
In all the Warriors took seven of their 13 shots in the second half. Erskine took 20 of their 32 in the first half, many of the total coming from distance and never were really threatening despite being on target.
In the overtime session, SWU was whistled for a foul in the box as keeper Krista Anonie challenged an Erskine attacker for a ball on the left side of the six-yard box. A penalty kick was awarded and Mel Foster stepped up and nailed it for her second goal of the year.
The Warriors had some good chances in the first half, despite the smaller number of opportunities. Taylor knocked a ball over the crossbar after she was played in all alone in front of the keeper. Late in the second half Ariail Lankford's header attempt was saved by Erskine's keeper Ashton Burgess.
Anonie made 12 saves in goal for the Warriors while her counterpart, Burgess, made five saves to preserve the shutout.
The Warriors hit the road for two straight, at Emmanuel on Saturday and at King (Tenn.) next Wednesday. SWU returns home for Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 25 to host North Greenville.
