CENTRAL, S.C. – A pair of errors in the eighth inning gave Southern Wesleyan the lone run in a 1-0 win over Bluefield in the season opener for both teams.
The Warriors (1-0) scored the lone run on a wild play with one out in the bottom of the eighth. After an error and a pair of walks loaded the bases, Bluefield's Dylan Cole threw a pitch in the dirt. Tyler Bice darted down the third base line then quickly retreated after seeing the ball bounce back to catcher Tyler Lundgren. When Bice reached third base he was joined by teammate Joe Henderson. Henderson then took off back to second base and Chris McCollister's throw went into right field allowing Bice to trot home.
Andrew Howard came in to pick up the save in the top of the ninth, striking out one. Justin Adams picked up the win in relief after allowing one hit in the top of the eighth. Matt Craig started on the mound and scattered nine hits over six innings, striking out three. Daniel Chappell also pitched an inning on the day.
J.J. Julian had two of SWU's five hits on the day, picking up singles in the fifth and seventh innings. Michael Hyman, Tyler Lollis and Johnny Ponder all produced singles in the game.
Bluefield collected 10 hits on the night but left 12 men on base. Zac Russell-Myers pitched seven innings of shutout ball, allowing just five hits and striking out six in the no-decision.
