BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. – Southern Wesleyan men's cross country followed up a 10th place showing in their season opener with a 6th place finish at the Hyder-McMahill College Invitational hosted by Montreat College on Saturday.
Emmanuel College won the invitational, setting the pace for the 11-team field with 21 points. SWU finished with 168, just one behind the host Cavaliers. Emmanuel had four of the top five and all five scorers were in the top-10.
Senior Josh Thatcher paced the Warriors for the second straight week, turning in a time of 28:15. His time was good enough for a 24th placement in the 104-racer field. Thatcher was followed by a pair of freshman, Stephen Spearman and Robert Gwinn. Spearmann placed 31st with a time of 29:04 and just five seconds later Gwinn crossed the finish line to take 32nd. John Fredrickson (29:23, 37th) and Nick Shear (29:48, 44th) round out the scorers for the Warriors.
The Warriors will take a week off before hosting the Warrior Invitational on Saturday, September 28. The men's race is set to begin at 9:45 a.m.
