CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan men's golf won the Mutts Invitational at Smithfields Country Club by nine strokes, finishing up play on Tuesday.
Round Two: Zach Moore fired a two-under 70 on day two to lead the Warriors to a first place finish. Moore won the event with a one-over 145 for the tournament. Tyler Cozad from SWU and Bob Jones' Micah Gold finished at two-over 146. Gold shot a round-low 69 on Tuesday while Cozad carded a 75 after finishing in a tie for the lead on Monday with a 71.
The Warriors finished the tournament with a team total of 610 (304-306) and outpaced Emmanuel (619) by nine strokes. SWU's Monday scored was altered from 297 to 304 after Matthew Moore's first round was disqualfied after signing an incorrect scorecard. That didn't matter for the Warriors as they defeated the competition. Emmanuel improved from a 311 on Monday to shoot a 308 on day two. Spartanburg Methodist led after the score change on Monday with a 301 but shot 324 on Tuesday to fall off the lead.
Matthew Moore shot a 77 on Tuesday which was the second lowest score for the team on the day. Cozad was playing the tournament as an individual. David Brown followed up his 75 on Monday with a 78 on Tuesday for the Warriors.
Round One: The Warriors shot 297 on Monday to lead the field by four strokes over Spartanburg Methodist. Emmanuel College shot 311 to sit in third while Martin Methodist shot 315 to place fourth. Bob Jones University (328) and Baptist College of Florida (355) round out the field.
SWU's Tyler Cozad sits in a three-way tie for first with Emmanuel's Drew Bryant and SMC's Briar Herd who all shot a one-under 71. Cozad leads the field while not playing as part of the team competition for the Warriors. Out of the top five players, Matthew Moore leads SWU at even-par 72 and sits in a tie for fourth.
Zach Moore, David Brown and Bobby Few are in a five-way tie for sixth after all shooting a three-over 75. Darren Gessner from SWU is also tied for sixth despite not being part of the team's top five for the tournament.
The Warriors will head to Florida next week to take part in the NCCAA National Tournament in Panama City. SWU finished fourth a year ago.
