Late Rally Not Enough to Propel Warriors Past Trojans

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan rallies late, but are unable to pass Anderson as Trojans claim 9-6 run victory.

The Warriors picked up seven hits in the game with both Tristan Tillman and Kade Bowling had two hits.  Cole Kirschner had the lone extra base hit of the game for Southern Wesleyan as he doubled.  Tillman led the team with three of the four RBIs.  Southern Wesleyan walked nine times and stole five bases.  Ethan Shimmel led the team with two steals in the game.  Kade Bowling, Matthew McCaffrey and Cotes Reid each stole one base.

Luke Weldon started the game on the mound and pitched one inning while striking out two batters.  He was followed by eight relief pitchers.  Coleman Wylie led the team with three strikeouts in the game.  Gavin Kent, Matthew White, Logan Brazell, and Benjamin Applebee also had strikeouts in the game.

How It Happened

The Trojans of Anderson were first on the board as they brought in runs in the top of the first and fourth innings to take a 4-0 run lead over the Warriors.

Southern Wesleyan got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning.  With one out, Josh Long hit a single into fight field.  Cotes Reid came in to pinch run for Long and then stole second base.  A walk to Luke Taylor put two runners on base and brought Tristan Tillman up to bat.  Tillman hit a single into left field to allow Reid to come in to score.

A triple by Myles Denton and a single off the bat of Gray Wells allowed Anderson on to take a 6-1 run lead over the Warriors in the sixth inning.

The Warriors answered in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Ethan Shimmel led off by reaching on a walk.  Shimmel then stole second base to get into scoring position.  Kade Bowling reached first on a six pitch walk.  As both Shimmel and Bowling stole a base, a passed ball on the steal allowed Shimmel to come in to score and put Bowling on third base.  Cole Kirschner walked to put runners on the corners and bring Matthew McCaffrey up to bat.  McCaffrey put the ball into play, but an error on first allowed him to reach and brought Bowling to come in to score.  Both Kirschner and McCaffrey advanced on another passed ball by the Trojans.  Harrison Garrett walked to load up the bases.  With the bases full of Warriors and two outs, Tristan Tillman hit a single up the middle to put the Warriors behind the Trojans 6-5.

Anderson was not discouraged as they brought two more runs in to score in the top of the seventh inning to regain their three run lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Southern Wesleyan brought another run in to score.  Ethan Shimmel hit a single into right field.  With one out and Shimmel at first, Kade Bowling hit a single into right center field.  However, as the Trojans tried to collect the ball, an error in right field allowed Shimmel to come in to score.

The Trojans brought one more run in to score in the top of the ninth inning to win the game in a 9-6 final score.

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will host the North Greenville Trailblazers on March 20-21.  They will then travel over to Anderson, SC to take on the Anderson Trojans for the third time this season on March 24.  On March 27-28, the Warriors will travel down to Franklin Springs, GA to take on the Emmanuel Lions.
