Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Chowan Hawks in an 81-70 final score on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors shot 37.5% from the field in the loss with four players posting double digits. Makayla Raines led the team with 18 points. Behind her, Peyton Looky had 17 points and both Kyra Price and Trinity Nesbitt had 10 points. Southern Wesleyan totaled six assists with both DeYana Hayes and Emily Gamon having two assists to their names.
Southern Wesleyan totaled 22 rebounds in the loss. Trinity Nesbitt led the team as she pulled down seven boards. Behind Nesbitt, Kyra Price had five rebounds awarded to her. Price had two of the four blocks. The other blocks came from Savanna Nicholson and DeYana Hayes. The Warriors recorded five steals.

How It Happened
An early foul by the Warriors sent Ayanna Rutledge to the charity stripe to kick-off the first quarter. Rutledge knocked down both her baskets to give the Hawks the early lead. Chowan continued to attack as Yasmine Brown put up back-to-back layups. Southern Wesleyan cut their lead down to four as Kyra Price put up a mid-range. Savanna Nicholson passed the ball down to Peyton Looky who laid the ball up into the basket to keep the Warriors within two. Chowan pushed ahead once again, but Price answered with a three pointer.
The Hawks were first on the board in the second quarter as Wisdom Banks laid the ball up into the basket. With just over seven on the clock, Peyton Looky knocked down a three pointer. However, Chowan continued to push ahead as Alexandria James-Fearon put up a mid-range shot. Trinity Nesbitt laid the ball up into the basket and was fouled in the process to earn the and-one basket. The Warriors continued to fight back as Makayla Raines got up a couple of baskets to put them within one point of the Hawks. Makayla Raines stepped beyond the arc to collect a pass from DeYana Hayes and quickly put up a three pointer to tie the game up. The Hawks got up a couple last second shots off free throws to lead 38-35 going into the locker room.
The Warriors continued to fight as Makayla Raines hit a mid-range to start the third quarter. A layup by Nyeisha Savage put the Hawks back on top by three. Chowan continued to attack the net as Savage and Yasmine Brown put up shots. With just under seven on the clock, Emily Gamon knocked down a three pointer. The Warriors pressed on as Kyra Price and Savanna Nicholson hit back-to-back three pointers. A foul by Wisdom Banks sent Gamon to the charity stripe. Gamon hit both her free throws to put the Warriors back within five points of the visiting Hawks. In the final seconds of the quarter, Ayanna Rutledge fouled Makayla Raines while she attempted a three pointer to send her to the charity stripe. Raines hit two of her three shots to put them behind the Hawks 59-56 at the end of the quarter.
The Hawks regained their five point lead early in the fourth quarter as Alexandria James-Fearon put up a mid-range shot. Peyton Looky drove to the basket and laid the ball up, but the Hawks answered with a layup by Nyeisha Savage. Chowan pressed on as a mid-range by Yawmari Darden allowed them to extend their lead to twelve. However, a layup by Trinity Nesbitt put the Warriors back within ten points of the Hawks with just under four minutes left in the game. Makayla Raines sent the ball out to Savanna Nicholson who stepped right outside the arc to hit a three pointer. However, the Hawks went on to claim a 81-70 point victory over the Warriors.
What's Next
Southern Wesleyan will remain at home on February 10 as they welcome the Erskine Flying Fleet to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium for a 5pm tip-off. They will then travel to Pembroke, NC to take on the UNC Pembroke Braves on February 14 and to Bristol, TN on February 18 to take on the King Tornado. The Warriors will host the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on February 21.
