Raines Hits 1000 Collegiate Point as Warriors Fall to Bulldogs

Central, SC – Makayla Raines hit her 1000 career collegiate point as the Warriors challenged the Barton Bulldogs on Wednesday evening.  However, the Warriors could not pass the Bulldogs as Barton took the game in a 76-71 final score.

The Warriors shot 42.6% from the field and were 44% from beyond the arc against the Bulldogs.  Makayla Raines led the team as she totaled 37 points in the loss.  Savanna Nicholson also posted double digits as she had 15 points in the game.  Of the 10 assists, Peyton Looky led the team with six.

Southern Wesleyan pulled down 26 total rebounds with both Makayla Raines and Kyra Price having seven boards awarded to them.  The Warriors stole the ball away from the Bulldogs six times.  Peyton Looky led the team with four steals while both Raines and Danielle Earley had solo steals.

How It Happened

The Warriors were first on the board as Makayla Raines laid the ball up into the basket.  Raines hit a three pointer to extend the Warriors lead to five before the Bulldogs got on the board on a mid-range by MaKayla Noble.  Barton cut the Warriors lead back down to two as Celeste Bailey laid the ball up into the basket.  Danielle Earley got the ball under the basket to Kyra Price who laid it up for her first points of the game.  Makayla Raines collected her 1000 collegiate career point as she knocked down a three pointer with just over two minutes left in the first quarter.  Layne Sleight hit a three pointer, but the Warriors continued to press ahead as Raines hit another three pointer.

Makayla Raines laid the ball up for her eighteenth point of the game to start the second quarter.  Barton would not relent though as Cyntiah Braden and Lauren Farrell each got up layups to tie the game up at twenty.  The Bulldogs took the lead, but the Warriors answered as Peyton Looky passed the ball out to Savanna Nicholson.  Nicholson stepped right outside the arc and hit a three for her first points of the games.  Trinity Nesbitt laid the ball up into the basket, but the Bulldogs took the lead on a layup out of the hands of MaKayla Noble.  Barton took a six point lead as Layne Sleight put up a mid-range, but Makayla Raines knocked down another three at the buzzer to put the Warriors behind the Bulldogs 37-34 going into the locker room.

Barton struck quickly in the third quarter as MaKayla Noble laid the ball up into the basket.  Lauren Mingo fouled Kyra Price to send her to the charity stripe.  Price hit both her shots to put the Warriors back within three.  However, Celeste Bailey put up a three pointer to regain the Bulldogs six point advantage.  With just over eight minutes on the clock, Makayla Raines hit another three pointer.  Barton pushed on as Cyntiah Braden and Sleight each got up layups.  Savanna Nicholson laid the ball up and was fouled in the process to earn the and-one basket.  Nicholson knocked the ball away from the Bulldogs into the hands of Peyton Looky.  Looky passed the ball down the court back to Nicholson who laid the ball up into the basket.  Raines would not relent as she answered the three pointer by Sleight with a three of her own.

Lauren Mingo kicked off the final quarter of the game as she laid the ball up into the basket.  A foul by the Bulldogs sent Peyton Looky to the charity stripe.  Looky hit both her baskets to put the Warriors back within nine.  Lauren Farrell put the ball right back up into the basket off a rebound, but the Warriors answered as Makayla Raines wove past the defense to get up a layup of her own.  Savanna Nicholson stepped right outside the arc and put up her second three pointer of the night.  The Warriors pressed on as Peyton Looky hit a three pointer to put the Warriors back within five points of the Bulldogs.  Raines pulled down a rebound and rushed down the court to lay the ball up into the basket.  The Bulldogs answered as Celeste Bailey got up a layup.  Nicholson hit a three pointer and was fouled in the process to send her to the free throw line.  She hit her basket to put the Warriors within one point of the Bulldogs with just under three minutes left in the game.  However, Barton ended up on top in a 76-71 final score.

 

 

What's Next

The Warriors will remain at home on February 7 as they host the Chowan Hawks at 2pm.  They will then welcome the Erskine Flying Fleet to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on February 10 at 5pm.  Southern Wesleyan will travel to Pembroke, NC to take on the UNC Pembroke Braves on February 14.
