Nicholson, Raines Post Double Digits as Warriors Fall to Mountain Lions

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Young Harris Mountain Lions on Thursday evening in an 88-50 final score.

The Warriors shot 28.1% from the field and were 34.6% from the arc in the loss to the Mountain Lions.  Savanna Nicholson led the team with 16 points with Makayla Raines right on her heels with 15 points.  Of the five assists, Raines led the team with three.  Both Danielle Earley and DeYana Hayes had solo assists.

Southern Wesleyan pulled down 18 rebounds in the game with Kyra Price leading the team with four.  Danielle Earley and Emily Gamon each had three rebounds to their name.  The lone block of the game came off the hands of Trinity Nesbitt.  Both Makayla Raines and Peyton Looky had two steals.

How It Happened

The Mountain Lions shut the Warriors out for the first six minutes of the game as baskets by Chassidy Fedd, Natalie Jojola and Lilly Griffith allowed Young Harris to take a 14-0 point lead.  The Warriors got on the board as a foul sent Savanna Nicholson to the charity stripe.  Nicholson got up one of her shots.  Peyton Looky laid the ball up into the basket for the Warriors.  However, Young Harris pressed on to extend their lead to 28-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Southern Wesleyan was first on the board in the second quarter as Makayla Raines stole the ball away from the Mountain Lions and went coast-to-coast to lay the ball up into the basket.  However, the Mountain Lions answered with a three pointer by Annalise Malone.  Kyra Price stole the ball away from Young Harris and sent the ball down the court to Raines.  Raines quickly got the ball into the hands of Lexie Ransom who got up from right outside the arc to hit a three pointer.  The Warriors continued to challenge as Price put up a three pointer of her own.  With just over three minutes on the clock, Savanna Nicholson drove under the basket and laid the ball up into the basket.  DeYana Hayes pulled down a rebound and quickly sent it out to Peyton Looky.  Looky knocked down the three pointer to put the Warriors behind the Mountain Lions 47-21 at halftime.

The Warriors struck quickly in the third quarter as Danielle Earley got the ball out to Makayla Raines.  Raines stepped beyond the arc and knocked down a three pointer.  The Mountain Lions answered with a three pointer by Natalie Jojola.  Savanna Nicholson stepped beyond the arc and hit a three pointer.  However, Young Harris increased the intensity as Chassidy Fedd knocked down another three.  In the final seconds of the third quarter, Makayla Raines got up a floating jump shot.  Annalise Malone laid the ball up into the basket, but the Warriors answered with a three at the buzzer by Raines.

Makayla Raines laid the ball up into the basket to start the final quarter of the game.  The Warriors pressed on as DeYana Hayes laid the ball up into the basket.  Natalie Jojola, Rhianon Saller and Kamryn Bates each got up layups.  Danielle Earley laid the ball up into the basket and was fouled in the process to send her to the charity stripe.  Earley hit her and-one basket to put the Warriors behind the Mountain Lions 82-42.  Kyra Price pulled down a rebound and the Warriors transitioned the ball down the court.  Savanna Nicholson collected the ball and put up a floater.  Nicholson went on the attack again as she knocked down another three pointer.  Despite a last second three by Nicholson, Young Harris went on to win the game in a 88-50 final score.

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will hit the road to Florence, SC on February 2 as they take on the Franics Marion Patriots at 5pm.  They will then return to Central, SC on February 4 to host the Barton Bulldogs at 5pm.  Southern Wesleyan will taken on the Chowan Hawks on February 7 and then the Erskine Flying Fleet on February 10.
