Warriors Drop Final Two Games of Series Against Braves

Pembroke, NC – Southern Wesleyan dropped the final two games of the series against the UNC Pembroke Braves on Saturday afternoon.  They dropped game one 9-1 before falling 20-4 in game two.

The Warriors picked up two hits in the first game of the afternoon.  Marty Grisso led the team with two hits.  The lone RBI of the game came off the bat of Zachary Kim as he hit a double.  Southern Wesleyan walked two times.  Christopher Hund started the game on the mound and pitched 3.2 innings while striking out four batters.  Both Ash Faulk and Adrian Abad came in to pitch in relief.

Southern Wesleyan went on to pick up eight hits in game two.  Gage Shaver led the team with two hits.  Griffin Pickhardt recorded a double.  The Warriors walked four times and both Travis Hammond and Cam Mitchem were hit by pitches.  Nick Vollmert started game two on the mound and pitched 1.1 innings.  Six Warriors came in to pitch in relief.  Gehrig Schreiber led the team with three strikeouts.

How It Happened

Game One

Christopher Hund held the Braves scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when they brought their first run across the plate.

UNC Pembroke went on the offensive again in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to bring eight more runs in to score.

Southern Wesleyan brought their lone across home plate in the top of the sixth inning.  With two outs, Marty Grisso hit a single up the middle.  Zachary Kim followed by hitting a double to right field to bring Grisso in to score.  However, the Braves prevented the Warriors from bringing another run in as they won game one in a 9-1 final score.

 

 

 

 

 

Game Two

The Braves went on the offensive early in game two as they brought five runs in to score by the end of the second inning. 

Southern Wesleyan countered in the top of the fourth inning.  Gage Shaver hit a single up the middle and then advanced to second when Cam Mitchem was hit by a pitch.  With one out, Justin Purdom hit a single through the right side to load up the bases.  Blayze Haddock singled to right center to bring Shaver in and put the Warriors behind the Braves 5-1.

UNC Pembroke was not done as they brought five more runs in to score in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Warriors fought back in the top of the fifth.  Jason Culley laid down a bunt to third base for a single to bring Griffin Pickhardt to the plate.  Pickhardt hit the ball to left center field for a double that allowed Culley to score.  With Pickhardt at second, Luke Staton hit the ball down the left field line for a single that brought Pickhardt across home plate.  Gage Shaver singled to center field to allow Staton to advance to second, and then a wild pitch allowed Staton to take third.  With Staton ninety feet from home, Cam Mitchem hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Staton in to score and put the Warriors behind the Braves 10-4.

The Braves continued to attack the plate as they brought runs in to score in the bottom of the fifth, seventh and eighth innings to win the game in a 20-4 final score.
