Tornado Upends Southern Wesleyan

Central, S.C. - Southern Wesleyan fell to the King Tornado on Thursday evening in a 90-77 final.

The Warriors shot 41.5% from the field in the loss to King. Ta'Jay Dunlap led the team with a career-high of 31 points. Cameron Holmes followed with 14 points and Tranard Ferrell with 10. As a team, the Warriors had nine assists with Dunlap having four and TJ Harvin adding three. Southern Wesleyan posted 31 rebounds with Holmes leading the team with nine, followed by Hunter Davis with eight. Dunlap also had two of the five steals and Jalen Lowery had the lone block of the night.

How It Happened

King jumped out with three of the first four baskets to take an early 8-2 lead. The Warriors were able to break through double-digits with a jump shot from Ta'Jay Dunlap to cut the Tornado's lead to 17-11. Southern Wesleyan played chase as they fought to take control of the game with shots from Dunlap and Tranard Ferrell. Hunter Davis and Cameron Holmes would put the Warriors behind at only 23-33 with a late push in the first half. Dunlap would cut the Tornado's lead to seven with less than three minutes to go before halftime. King would hold a 41-33 lead as the clock hit zero. 

Holmes responded to Mike Salomon's layup in the early minutes of the second half with a 3-pointer. Jalen Lowery would make a 3-pointer of his own a few minutes later to put the Warriors trailing 43-57. Ferrell and Clenzo Ross would try to close the gap with shots that would put the score at 67-55, with King still leading. Dunlap would score nine of the Warriors next eleven points as the end of regulation time was nearing. Despite another three points from Dunlap with under a minute remaining, King went on to win the contest 90-77.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan travels to play the North Greenville Crusaders on January 8 at 7:30 p.m. They remain on the road as they travel to play the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on January 11 at 7:30 p.m.
