Warriors Unable to Rise Above Tornado

Bristol, T.N. – Southern Wesleyan fell to King University in Conference Carolina action in a final score of 90-57 on Monday evening.

 

Two Warriors posted double figures in the loss to the Tornado.  Darius Sharpe led the Warriors in scoring with 21 points.  He was followed by Justice McCullough with 16 points.  Southern Wesleyan posted a field goal percentage of 42.3% while King boasted one of 48%.  There were 10 assists made by Southern Wesleyan.  Darrian Brown led the Warriors with five assists in the evening's matchup.  He was followed by De'Quan Weldon with three. 

 

Justice McCullough posted nine rebounds.  He was followed by Darrian Brown with six.  The Warriors made 39 rebounds as a team in the loss compared to the 26 rebounds made by King.  Three Warriors posted a block apiece against the Tornado.

 

De'Quan Weldon posted three steals for the Warriors in the loss.  The Warriors had 28 turnovers in the contest compared to King's 11.

Coach Wimphrie Says…

"We shot the ball slightly better than we've been shooting it, but our mistakes continue to hurt us.  King scored 33 points off 28 turnovers and those numbers are very difficult to overcome.  We must continue emphasizing improvements in this area.  Our guard play have to get better in the games ahead."  

 

 

How It Happened                                                                                                                           

The King Tornado struck first in the game on Monday night with a layup by Derick Pope, and then lengthened their lead to four-to-zero on a second shot by Pope.  Justice McCullough made a lay-up to put the Warriors on the board.  The Tornado countered with 3-point jump shots by Mike Salomon, CJ Good and Derick Pope to bring their lead to 13-2.  The Warriors rallied back with layups by Kevin Stamps and Darrian Brown, and continued their rally on layup on Zalan Richards to bring the score to 23-12 Tornado lead.  The Tornado's CJ Good made a three point jump shot to regain their fifteen point lead over the Warriors making the score 33-18.  With seconds left, Justice McCullough made a jump shot to bring the score to 38-24.

 
 
 

The Tornado scored a 3-point jump shot by CJ Good, but the Warriors countered on a 3-point jump shot by Darius Sharpe to bring the score to 41-27.  Despite the Warrior three point shot, Shon'Dre Dukes made a dunk to give the Tornado a 16-point lead.  De'Quan Weldon made a three point jump shot, making the score 45-33.  King surged ahead, scoring layups by Shon'Dre Dukes and Nole Fahbulleh to bring the game to 55-38 King lead.  Sharpe made a three point shot and followed a couple seconds later with a layup to bring the Warriors to within twelve of the Tornado.  Justice McCullough made a jump shot to make the score 66-45 Tornado lead.  The Warriors dropped to thirty-one points behind the Tornado on a three point shot by CJ Good.  The Tornado lengthened their lead to thirty-eight points on a free throw by Derick Pope.  With three minutes left of basketball action, Darius Sharpe made a 3-point jump shot to make the score 90-50 King lead.  The King Tornado won the game 90-57.

 
 
 

What's Next

 The Warriors will return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on Saturday, January 21 to take on North Greenville at 4 p.m.  They will remain at home to take on Pfeiffer on January 24, Mount Olive on January 27 and Barton on January 28.
