Box Score CANTON, OHIO- Sarah Hughey had 24 kills and a .488 hitting percentage in Southern Wesleyan's 3-2 win against Malone in their final match at the Hall of Fame City Challenge.
Hughey also had eight digs, one solo block and one block assist. Shelby Sheets had nine kills, five digs, and two block assists. Annika Jones recorded 48 assists, 14 digs, and three kills. Milica Stamenic led the team with 26 digs and also had three assists along with two aces.
The Pioneers (2-2) took the first set 25-18 and the second set 25-20 as they held the Warriors (1-3) to a .194 and .139 hitting percentage respectively. Southern Wesleyan came back and won the third set 25-23 and the fourth set 25-18 to send the match to the fifth set for their third consecutive match.
The Warriors started the fifth set with a 9-4 run for a five point lead. Malone cut the lead to one point with a 6-2 run to make it 11-10. Southern Wesleyan closed out the match by scoring four consecutive points including winning the match on set point with an ace by Jones.
Hughey was also named to the Hall of Fame City Challenge All-Tournament Team.
The Warriors will play Montreat in their home opener Sept. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
