Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C.- Southern Wesleyan allowed 17 runs in its 9-1 and 8-7 losses to Newberry.
In game one, the Wolves (15-7) scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning for an early five run lead. The Warriors (10-10) scored one run in the top of the second as Katie Byrd scored off of a fielding error by the shortstop. Newberry added three runs in the bottom of the second and one run in the bottom of the fourth while also holding Southern Wesleyan to three hits in the final three innings to seal the win.
Lucy Wolff (4-3) allowed seven earned runs off of seven hits and had one strikeout.
In game two, Lizzie Fela doubled to drive in Sara Sweatt in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. They added another run in the top of the second as Sweatt singled to score Ashleigh Wilbur. The Wolves tied the game with two runs in bottom of the fourth. Allison Barbee hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Sweatt in the top of the fifth to give them a 3-2 lead. Newberry added three runs in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the bottom of the sixth to gain a 6-3 lead. The Warriors tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh with three runs and held the Wolves scoreless in the bottom of the inning to send the game to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Southern Wesleyan put two runners into scoring position with two outs, but were unable to score as their next batter struck out. Newberry's three batters grounded out, one of their runners was picked off at third base, and popped out in the bottom of the eighth to extend the game. Barbee doubled to left center to drive in Tiffany Cathey to give Southern Wesleyan a 7-6 lead in the top of the ninth. They were able to get a runner into scoring position, but they were unable to drive them in. In the bottom of the ninth, the Wolves tied the game with an RBI single with one out in the inning. Two batters later, they hit a walk-off RBI single to right center to seal the win for Newberry.
Sweatt went 4-for-5 with three runs, one RBI, and a stolen base. Barbee batted 2-for-4 with four RBIs, one run, and two doubles. Fela went 3-for-3 with one run and a double.
The Warriors next travel to Georgia Gwinnett tomorrow March 9 for a doubleheader that starts at 4 p.m.
