Moreland Homers and Haag Strikes Out 10 as Warriors Take Down Hawks

Duncan, SC – The Warriors came out strong in their opening game of the Conference Carolinas Championship on Thursday evening as they took down the Chowan Hawks in a 4-3 final to keep them on the winners side of the tournament bracket.

Southern Wesleyan had four hits in the game with Marissa Moreland leading the team with two hits.  Moreland picked up Southern Wesleyan's first multi-base hit of the series as she hit a home run over the center field fence.  The other multi-base hit came in the form of a double off the bat of Olivia Haag.  The Warriors walked twice and both Moreland and Riley Brown stole bases.

Olivia Haag pitched a complete game in the circle for the Warriors.  Haag struck out a season high 10 batters in the game while only allowing six hits.

How It Happened

The Warriors charged out of the gate as Marissa Moreland drilled the ball over the center field fence for a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning.

Southern Wesleyan was not done as they attacked the plate in the fourth inning.  Olivia Haag sent the ball over the head of the left fielder for a double.  Haag then advanced to third on a wild pitch.  With one out, Abby Lawson hit a single through the left side to allow Haag to come in to score.  Chalee Roper came in to pinch run for Lawson and then advanced to second as Maddie Crouch was hit by a pitch.  A fielder's choice off the bat of Megan Ware took Crouch off the bases, but allowed Roper to advance to third base.  Ware then advanced to second base to put both runners in scoring position and bring Marissa Moreland up to the plate.  Moreland hit a single into center field to allow both Roper and Ware to come in to score to extend their lead to 4-0.

An error allowed the Hawks to get on the board as Ryleigh Gough came in to score their first run of the game.  A double by Ava Mizell and a single off the bat of Kyra Helton brought two more runs in to score.

The Warriors would not back down as Olivia Haag forced the final Hawks' batters to strike out to allow the Warriors to pick up a 4-3 run victory in the opening game of the tournament.
