Warriors Fall Against Cincinnati Christian in Third Nationals Match

Kendall Vallancourt contributes with 10 kills in the loss against Cincinnati Christian University.

The Warriors struck first in their last match of pool play in the NCCAA Volleyball Nationals on Friday afternoon.  They took a 4-1 lead over Cincinnati Christian with the assistance of a kill by Kendall Vallancourt.  Kills by Vallancourt and Shelby Sheets drove the Warriors to a 9-8 lead, however an attack error allowed Cincinnati Christian to take a 10-9 lead over Southern Wesleyan University.  A kill by junior Paige O'Connor allowed the Warriors to tie the set 12-12.  Cincinnati Christian sprung forward after that, scoring 10 times in comparison to the Warriors six and taking a 22-18 lead.  The Warriors were able to put one more on the board before Cincinnati Christian took the first set of the match 25-19.

Southern Wesleyan University struck first once again in the second set on a kill by Kendall Vallancourt.  With the help of kills by Paige O'Connor, Shelby Sheets and Katie Anderson, they were able to push forward to a 10-9 lead.  However, despite kills by Vallancourt and Anderson, Cincinnati Christian pulled ahead 18-17.  The Warriors tied the set on an attack error by Miller, but Cincinnati Christian pulled ahead yet again 25-21 to win the second set.

Like the previous two sets, the Southern Wesleyan University Warriors scored first after errors by the opposing team.  Cincinnati Christian countered to put 5 points on the board, but a kill by Kendall Vallancourt gave the Warriors a 6-5 lead.  Kills by Kendall Vallancourt and Jenna Karel brought the Warrior lead to 12-11, however, Cincinnati Christian took a 16-15 lead over the Warriors with help from kills by Abel and Hiance.  The Warriors fought to take the third set, but were unable to pull ahead, losing the third and final set 25-19.

"I'm very proud of the team and I'm thankful to be apart of a great season!" said Head Volleyball Coach Julia Reininga.  She continued, "We will miss our amazing seniors: Sarah Hughey, Milica Stamenic and Jenna Karel.  They will always be part of the SWU volleyball family!"

Annika Jones made 25 assists in the loss.  Milicia Stamenic and Katie Anderson combine for 27 digs.  The Warriors are now 15-15 and 12-4 in Conference action.  Cincinnati Christian University is now 20-13.  This was the last match of the season for the Warriors.
