Warriors Fight Hard But Tigers Gain Upperhand

Darius Sharpe contributes with 29 points in the loss against the Benedict College Tigers in there second game in the Wesleyan Way Invitational Tournament.  He is followed by Justice McCullough (15), Kevin Stamps (13) and Daryl Myers (12) with a combined 40 points.

 

The Tigers struck first in the afternoon match up with a three pointer by Jaylin Gilbert.  A good free throw by Kevin Stamps put the Warriors on the board, but another three pointer by Gilbert allowed the Benedict College Tigers to take the lead to 6-1.  Stamps produced a three pointer to bring the score to 8-5 Tigers lead.  Senior Darius Sharpe made a jump shot to bring the score to 10-7 and a layup by Justice McCullough brought the Warriors to one point behind the Tigers and the score to 12-11.  A three point by Mike Udume gave the Tigers a 15-11 lead, but Jemiah Wimphrie countered with a good jumper to bring the game to 15-13.  However, a jumper by Quayshaun Hawkins gave the Tigers a 29-18 lead over the Warriors.  After a 25 minute inclement weather delay, Warriors' Darius Sharpe shoots a three point jump shot to make the score 23-33.  Justice McCullough made a jump shot to bring the Warriors within six points of the Tigers and the score 47-33.  At the half, the Benedict College Tigers lead 54-39.

 

Kevin Stamps makes a jump shot in the beginning of the second to bring the score to 56-45 Tigers lead.  Darius Sharpe delivers a three point jump shot with an assist by Daryl Myers to bring the Warriors without ten points and the score becomes 59-48.  The Warriors would not let the Tiger lead dampen their spirits as Daryl Myers scored a three point jump shot to bring the Warriors to 66-57 behind the Tigers.  Benedict College lengthened their lead to 81-63 on a three point jump shot by Mike Udume and then to 92-65 on a three point jump shot by Quayshaun Hawkins.  Justice McCullough and Kevin Stamps made a free throws to bring the Warriors to 94-72 behind the Tigers.  A dunk shot by Darius Sharpe brought the Warriors to twenty behind the Tigers and make the score 94-74.  The Benedict Tigers took the game with a score of 96-76.

 

Justice McCullough led the team in rebounds with 15.  Kevin Stamps led the Warriors in blocks with 2, and Darius Sharpe and Stamps were tied in steals for Southern Wesleyan in steals one steal apiece.  Sharpe had three assists in the second game of the tournament.

 

"We played a lot better tonight," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Charles Wimphrie.  He continued, "However, we are still shooting poorly from the field.  We are not yet a team that can come back from large deficits.  We have to be better prepared mentally from the start.  Physically we are good but mental approach is not where it needs to be.  I along with the coaching staff take full responsibility for that.  In the second half of the season, this will be emphasized a great deal moving forward."

 

The loss for the Southern Wesleyan Warriors makes their record now 2-9 and 1-2 in Conference Carolina action.  The Benedict College Tigers are now 3-4 and 2-0 in conference competition.  The Warriors will take a Christmas season break before returning to Southern Wesleyan's Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on January 3 to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats at 7:30 p.m in Conference Carolina action.
