Box Score Warriors win in penalty kicks against the Emmanuel College Lions Saturday evening.
Southern Wesleyan University and Emmanuel College battled from one side of the field to the other throughout the game, but despite shots on the goal by both teams neither could put a goal on the board. Michel Herszenhaut took the first shot for the Warriors.
The game was tied 0-0 after the first two halves of the game, forcing the Warriors and the Lions to go into overtime. The Warriors and Lions battled throughout both overtime periods, but neither team was able to gain the upper hand forcing the two teams into penalty kicks.
The penalty kicks began with Sergio Tapia and he scored. Emmanuel's Nico Becker countered with a goal tying the kicks at 1-1. Then SWU's Christian Taylor missed his goal, but Emmanuel's Nick Miller made his goal giving the Lions a 2 to 1 lead in penalty kicks. Nestor Gonzalez made his goal while Emmanuel's Sean Fitz Gerald missed his and the penalty kicks were tied 2-2. Sebastian Castro made his penalty kick and Emmanuel's Channing Park scored as well and the game remained in a 3-3 tie. It came down to the last two penalty kicks. Fernando Posada scored for the Warriors and then Emmanuel's Craig Russell missed his goal giving the Warriors a 4-3 win in the shootout.
"I'm so proud of the guys," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Garrett Bireline. "They've continued to grow and improve all season long. It's a tough way to end a match and Emmanuel and Coach Borchers have nothing to be ashamed of. We are excited to have another chance to go to Nationals."
Miguel Uribe contributed with 3 saves. The Warriors took 18 shots and Emmanuel shot 23 times. Sergio Tapia has the most amount of shots for the Warriors with five shots, three of which were on goal. Christian Taylor, Sebastian Castro, Sam Rowden and Michel Herszenhaut all had two shots.
The win for the Warriors makes their record become 11-8-2 and 6-4 in Conference Carolina action. The Emmanuel College Lions are now 11-7-1 and 6-4. The victory for the Warriors makes them the NCCAA South Region Champions.
The Warriors will advance to the Regional Championship playoffs that will begin Monday, November 8 and concludes Wednesday, November 30. The semifinals will then be played on Friday, December 2 with the Championship being held on Saturday December 3.
