Warriors Score 100 but Not Enough to Win Game

Box Score

Darius Sharpe scores 33 points in the loss to Newberry College on Saturday evening.

DJ Dobson scored the first point of the game for the Warriors to give them an early lead, but Newberry College countered by making two free throws and taking a 2-1 lead.  A layup by Chandler Harrison pushed the Warriors ahead 5-4 and then back-to-back three point shots by Darius Sharpe lengthened the Warriors lead to 13-8 over Newberry.  Jeremy Wert gave the Warriors a ten point lead after five minutes of play in the first half.  Newberry cut the lead down to 25-27 on a layup by DJ Copeland and then tied the game 30-30 on a layup by Quaman Burton before taking the lead on a layup by Musah Sackor.  De'Quan Weldon brought the Warriors back into the game on a free throw to tie the game 40-40.  The game continued to go back and forth throughout the first half, and by half-time Newberry was leading by only four points.

Newberry scored first in the second half of the game, but the Warriors were not going down silently as they countered with a three point jump shot by Jeremy Wert to bring the game to 62-65 Newberry lead.  Newberry led for much of the second half, but each time they scored the Warriors countered to put more points on the board.  After four minutes of action in the second half and on a three point jump shot by Darius Sharpe, Newberry only led by two with a score of 72-74.  Newberry was not done, breaking away from the Warriors and quickly gained a twenty point lead on a layup by DJ Copeland and making the game 99-79.  The Warriors rallied and, with the help of free throws by DJ Dobson, made the game 90-109.  Terry House broke the triple digit barrier for the Warriors on a layup giving them one hundred points on the board compared to Newberry's one hundred and twenty-four.  However it was not enough to give the Warriors the win and Newberry took the game 124-100.

"We gave a great effort today.  I was pleased with the way we played but not with the end results," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Charles Wimphrie.  He continued, "Newberry is an up tempo three point shooting team.  They average 45 three points attempts per game and average 98 points a game.  We knew what we had to do and we couldn't slow them down.  We gave up too many offensive rebounds which lead to their second chance opportunities."

The Warriors have four players who gain double digits in points scored.  Sharpe led the pack with 33 points.  He is followed by DJ Dobson (13), Jeremy Wert (12) and Justice McCullough (11).  Justice McCullough led the team in rehabs with nine.  Darrian Brown led the team in steals with three.  Both Dobson and McCullough had two blocks in the game.

The loss for the Warriors brings their record to 1-3 and 0-0 in Conference action.  Newberry College is now 3-1.  The Warriors will next travel to Pfeiffer on Tuesday, November 22 before traveling to Anderson to take on the Trojans on Monday, November 28.
