Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Wesleyan men's soccer team picked up their second consecutive win on Wednesday, defeating Newberry 3-2 at the Upward Star Center. The game was scheduled to be played at Newberry but was moved to Spartanburg due to poor field conditions at Newberry. With the win the Warriors improve to 5-3-1 on the season and the Wolves fall to 1-7.
Ivan Malagon got the scoring started at the 32:10 minute mark to put the Warriors up 1-0. The goal was Malagon's second of the season and teammate Michel Herszenhout got an assist on the play. Minutes before halftime Davis Bryan evened the score as the Wolves player rocketed the ball in off a sharp pass from the midfield. The 1-1 score would hold until the half.
Malagon would add another goal, his third of the year, in the 69th minute off of a corner kick from Marcelo Vargas. Minutes later, with the Warriors up 2-1, Newberry's Lucas Ferreira would add his first goal of the season off of a breakaway to again even the score. With just over three minutes left in regulation Southern Wesleyan's Sebastian Castro netted his third goal of the season off of a Keegan Wilkinson assist. Wilkinson passed a through ball to Castro from about 12 yards out to again put the Warriors ahead, this time for good as the lead would hold until the final whistle.
"I'm happy with the win, but a little disappointed in the way we played today," said head coach Camilo Rodriguez. "I hope we can learn from this game and get ready to play a very good Limestone team on Saturday."
Kickoff from Limestone is set for 7:30 p.m.
