Box Score 2 FLORENCE, ALA. - The Southern Wesleyan Warriors went 1-1 on Friday in the North Alabama Invite. The Warriors move to 3-3 on the young season.
In the first match against Quincy, the Warriors came out firing. In the first set, the Warriors won 25-19 over the Lions. In the second set, Quincy was feisty, but the Warriors held them off for a 28-26 win. The third set was much of the same, with the Lions hanging tight to the Warriors. Ultimately, the Warirors would win their second straight two point set, 26-24, and clinch the match in three sets. Sophomore Paige O'Connor and senior Sarah Hughey both recorded 14 kills to pace the Warriors while Megan Widener added 33 assists and 11 digs, both team and match highs.
"It's very tough to win three straight sets against a solid team like Quincy," said head coach Julia Reininga. "I'm proud of the team's composure in sets two and three as Quincy had several set points that we were able to fight off."
In the second set, Montevallo came out firing on all cylinders, winning the first two sets 25-17 and 29-27. The Warriors rallied to win the next two sets 25-17 and 25-19 to force a decisive fifth set. It was as close as could be, but the Warriors fell just short, falling 15-13.
Hughey again paced the Warriors with 29 kills, most in the match between both teams. O'Connor added 20 kills while Widener added an impressive 54 assists.
"We came out a little slow," Reininga said. "It's hard to be a team that good three sets in a row, but I'm really proud we didn't roll over after losing the first two. I really love the fight in this team! This weekend has great competition so we will continue to work out the kinks and grow as a team."
The tournament action continues Saturday as the Warriors play Kentucky Wesleyan at 10 a.m. ET and host school North Alabama at 2:30 p.m. ET.
