Warriors stay alive with 5-2 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan

Box Score

BOTETOURT, Va. – Southern Wesleyan softball is still alive in the NCCAA National Tournament after defeating Oklahoma Wesleyan 5-2 on Wednesday evening in an elimination game.

The Warriors will take on Cedarville on Thursday at noon in another elimination contest. It will be the third game of the tournament for both teams.

Just like in game one on Wednesday, the Warriors scored in the top of the first, but this time they made it last. Taylor Fox led off the game with one of her three hits, this one a single to left. After a pair of outs Lizzie Fela stepped up and drove in Fox with a double to left. It was the first of two RBIs for Fela in the game.

The Warriors piled on in the second, scoring three more runs to take a 4-0 lead. The bottom of the order got the rally started as Shelby Stroud led off the frame with a double to left center. After a single from Haley Collins, Alyssa Mendoza reached on a fielder's choice to set up the top of the lineup. Fox picked up her second hit in as many innings to drive in Collins.

After a walk to Sara Sweatt loaded the bases, Allison Barbee picked up her lone hit of the game to score Mendoza. Fela followed with a sac fly to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead after just 1.5 innings.

Meanwhile Callie Wayne was shutting down the Lady Eagles early. After a leadoff bunt in the first to Desiree Cavazos, Wayne retired eight in a row until Mayan Meza Tovar singled in the third. Oklahoma Wesleyan scored their only two runs in the sixth, putting together three of their eight hits.

Wayne improved to 7-7 with the win, striking out four in her sixth complete game of the season. She also hit her second home run of the season, a solo shot, in the seventh.

Jenna Daniel took the loss for Oklahoma Wesleyan to fall to 17-15 on the year. The Lady Eagles wrap up the season at 31-28. They entered the tournament as the No. 9 seed, losing earlier in the day to Mississippi College 10-1 in 5 innings.

The Warriors will move on to play Cedarville on Thursday at noon. The Warriors entered as the No. 6 seed, losing to Lee 9-3 in their opening game. The Yellow Jackets entered as the No. 10 seed and defeated Central Baptist 2-0 before falling to No. 2 seeded Simpson 8-6.

The winner of the SWU-Cedarville game will play the loser of Oklahoma Christian-Mississippi College.
