CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan softball split for the sixth straight time on Tuesday, this time against North Greenville. The Crusaders took game one 6-5 before the Warriors bounced back to win game two 3-0.
The Warriors will jump out of conference play by heading to Fort Valley State on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Wednesday's originally rescheduled game against Point was pushed back to April 14 to accommodate the Skyhawks need to reschedule conference games.
Game One
The Warriors allowed four unearned runs including all four scored by the Crusaders in the second and third innings, falling 6-5.
SWU scored first as Allison Barbee blasted her first of two home runs in the game, a two run shot down the left field line. Barbee was at it again in the third, giving the Warriors a 5-4 lead with a three-run shot just inside the foul pole down the left field line. The homer was the fourth for Barbee in three games and her ninth of the season.
The Crusaders tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly before taking the lead in the sixth on a double by Haley Gray. SWU loaded the bases in the bottom half but a fielder's choice cut down Barbee at the plat and a strike out ended the inning. The Warriors had the winning run on first in the seventh after Taylor Fox singled and Barbee walked but a groundout ended the game.
Barbee finished with three hits and five RBI in the game, reaching base four times. Sara Sweatt had two hits and scored twice before leaving the game after crashing into the fence trying to haul in a fly ball.
Callie Wayne tossed five innings but gave up 12 hits and six runs, just two of them earned. The loss drops Wayne to 4-7 on the season. Lucy Wolff pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit.
Game Two
Allison Parker allowed just one hit, a two-out double in the second, as she tossed sixth complete game and second shutout of the season.
Parker retired 12 in a row at one point from the 2nd into the 6th inning until a two-out walk. It was one of three walks allowed in the game; she also hit a batter. The lone hit came in the second inning, a two-out double by Megan Johnson.
The Warriors scored twice in the third innings as Haley Collins reached on a wild throw from the catcher after striking out to start the inning. She moved to second on a groundout two batters later before Lizzie Fela knocked her in with a double to center. Allison Barbee followed with a single into the gap to bring around Fela and put the Warriors ahead 2-0.
In the fifth inning Alyssa Mendoza belted her first home run of the season to start the inning, a shot to left that gave the Warriors some extra breathing room.
Barbee and Fela each finished with two hits in the game as the Warriors were held to just six in the game.
