CENTRAL, S.C. – For the fifth time in six doubleheaders and for the third straight one, Southern Wesleyan softball split a double dip on Tuesday, falling to Erskine 3-2 in eight innings in game one before rebounding to win game two 3-1.
The Warriors will be back in action on Thursday, hosting Judson (Ala.) for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
Game One
The Warriors didn't get a runner on base until the fifth before Danica Newton walked Ashleigh Wilbur with one out. Callie Wayne followed with a single and Natalie Johnson dropped in a single to shallow center to load the bases. Newton bounced back to strike out Lucy Wolff and get Haley Collins to fly out to end the inning.
Newton was tough to hit all day long as the Warriors were set down in order in the first four innings. Newton struck out eight in 5.1 innings.
Erskine took the lead in the top of the fifth as runs scored on hits from Brittany Reynolds and Erica McCarson. The Warriors tied the game in the sixth as Taylor Fox and Allison Barbee recorded back-to-back one-out singles. After Newton was pulled, Lizzie Fela singled in a run before a sac fly from Ashleigh Wilbur tied the game.
In extra innings Reynolds started the inning on second before moving to third on a sac bunt. A single by Sydney Smith gave the Flying Fleet the lead. In the bottom half it was Haley Collins starting the inning on second. A sac bunt put Collins on third with one out but the Warriors couldn't tie the game as Candace Fitch got a foul out and a strike out to end the inning.
Fitch picked up the win to improve to 5-2 with 2.2 innings of relief. She allowed just one hit and struck out four. Wolff took the loss despite allowing just two hits and one unearned run in three innings. She falls to 1-3 with the loss. Hunter Hoskins pitched the first five innings allowing just five hits and two runs, one earned.
Game Two
A three-run second gave the Warriors all the offense they needed as they bounced back to take game two 3-1. Fela started the inning with a single to center and was followed by a single by Wilbur. Callie Wayne provided the big blow with a two-run triple to center to chase home Fela and Wilbur. Two batters later Allison Parker fisted a ball down the third base line to score Wayne and give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
After picking up four hits off of Fitch in the first 1.1 innings, the Warriors managed just three more hits in the final 4.2 innings off of Kaylin White who struck out four without allowing a run.
Fela picked up another hit in the third and reached second on a groundout, one of just two runners to get in scoring position after the second. Taylor Fox reached third in the fifth inning as the Warriors left two on.
Erskine scored their lone run in the third on a sac fly off the bat of Brittany Reynolds. The Flying Fleet left a runner at second in that third inning before leaving two in scoring position in the fourth. Erskine put the tying run aboard in the seventh but Allison Parker induced a groundout to end the game.
Parker picked up her fourth win and improves to 4-3 with the complete game, her third of the year. She allowed three hits and walked three, striking out one.
