BELMONT, N.C. – Southern Wesleyan softball split a doubleheader on Saturday against Belmont Abbey as the Crusaders claimed game one 8-0 in five innings but the Warriors bounced back to take game two in extra innings 5-4.
SWU is scheduled to host Georgia Southwestern at 2 p.m. on Monday.
Game One
The Warriors were held to just three hits in game one as Samantha Jacobs tossed a complete game shutout for the Crusaders. Belmont Abbey put up six runs in the second as Allison Parker was knocked out in the second inning.
The Warriors only had three base runners in the contest, two of whom reached second base. Sara Sweatt doubled in the first but was left stranded. In the fourth Ashleigh Wilbur singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch but was left at second. Michaela Wickham singled in the third and was left at first.
Belmont Abbey scored six times in the second, picking up six hits in the process. The Crusaders added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to end the game.
Allison Parker took the loss to fall to 1-3 after 1.2 innings. She allowed four hits and five runs. Lucy Wolff tossed three innings in relief, allowing five hits and three runs. Samantha Jacobs improved to 3-6 with the three-hit shutout.
Game Two
The Warriros came from behind in game two to capture their third win in extras, 5-4. Shelby Stroud and Allison Barbee both hit homers in the game but it was a single by Natalie Johnson in the eighth that lifted the Warriors to victory.
Stroud led off the second with a home run to cut the deficit in half from two to one. The Warriors took the lead in the fifth as Barbee belted her third homer of the year, a two-run shot to put the Warriors up 3-2. The lead grew to 4-2 in the sixth as Taylor Fox knocked in Callie Wayne with a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the inning the Crusaders tied the game with two runs as the game was headed for extras. In the eighth Amber Donald was placed on second via the international tiebreak and moved to third on a groundout by Stroud. The next batter, Johnson, singled to right center to allow Fela to score. Hoskins came in to pitch in the bottom of the inning and allowed a walk but retired the other three batters she faced.
Hoskins picked up her first career save with her one inning of work. Johnson got the win to improve to 2-1 on the season with 1.1 innings of work, allowing just two hits.
