MARS HILL, N.C. – Southern Wesleyan rebounded after dropping the season-opening doubleheader with a sweep of their own on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors defeated Mars Hill 4-2 and 6-5.
The Warriors will be back in action on Wednesday as they head to Point University for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
Game 1
Lizzie Fela homered to lead off the 4th and break open a 2-2 tie to give the Warriors their first win of the season, 4-2, and the first win for head coach Becca Staton. Fela's first bomb of the season came off of MHU starter Taylor Hussey.
Callie Wayne went the distance for the Warriors in her first appearance of the season. The senior struck out two and walked three, giving up just two hits and two runs. Both runs came in the second after the Warriors took the lead with two in the first.
SWU got on the board early as Taylor Fox reached on an error to lead off the game. Alyssa Mendoza followed with a single before Fela drove in both runners with a single up the middle.
Mars Hill responded in the second as Aleshia Peek hit a two-run homer to right field after a walk to lead off the inning. The only other hit the Lions recorded off of Wayne was a third inning infield single.
The Warriors collected seven hits in the game as Fela was the lone player with a multi-hit effort.
Game 2
Lizzie Fela drove in three and the Warriors held on to take game two 6-5 in picking up their first sweep of the season. Fela hit a two-run homer in the first and doubled in a run in the fifth, her second double of the game and third extra base hit of the game.
The Warriors used that early 2-0 lead after Fela's second homer of the day as Mars Hill chipped away. The Lions got a run back in the bottom of the first with a sac fly after a walk were followed by a double steal.
The Warriors answered with a run in the third as Sara Sweatt scored on a wild play. Ashleigh Wilbur reached on a fielder's choice and was later thrown out on the base path later in the play. Lizzie Fela was thrown out trying to score from second on the play.
Mars Hill responded in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-3, scoring twice. The Warriors got on top in the fifth with a three spot. Fela doubled home Taylor Fox and Ashleigh Wilbur followed with a two-run single.
The Lions scored a run in the fifth and seventh to trim the margin to one but the Warriors were able to hold on for the win.
Natalie Johnson picked up her first career win with four innings of work. The freshman allowed four hits and four runs – only two earned – and walked four. Lucy Wolff picked up the save with a three-inning effort where she gave up just two hits and one run. Chelsea Broughman took the loss to fall to 0-1 for Mars Hill.
