Warriors Take Two from Skyhawks in Extras

WEST POINT, Ga. – Southern Wesleyan softball picked up a pair of extra-inning wins late on Wednesday night, defeating Point Univeristy 5-4 in 8 innings and 12-10 in 11 innings.

The Warriors will host Point for a return double-dip on Feb. 24. SWU returns home this weekend to host Fort Valley St. on Saturday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.

Game One
The Warriors went ahead 1-0 in the first inning as Allison Barbee blasted a home run with two outs in the inning. The Skyhawks got the run back in the second with a homer of their own from Brianna Lewis.

SWU went ahead again in the sixth with a sac fly from Natalie Johnson, scoring Callie Wayne. Point tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh after an error to lead off the inning.

In the eighth the Warriors put up three runs as Shelby Stroud, Johnson, Taylor Fox and Sara Sweatt all singled in the inning. In the bottom half the Skyhawks put the tying run on base after two scored but Lucy Wolff escaped the jam to pick up her first win of the season.

Wolff (1-1) pitched three innings in relief of Wayne. Wolff allowed five hits and three runs – none earned – and walked and struck out one. Wayne tossed five innings, allowing just four hits and a run. She struck out five.

Game Two
The Warriors went up 5-1 before needing to rally in the seventh to force extra innings. Sara Sweatt had six hits in the game including four doubles and Lizzie Fela and Ashleigh Wilbur collected three hits each. The two teams combined for 38 hits in the high-scoring contest.

The Warriors scored twice in the opening frame and added two more in the third to go up 4-0. Point added a run in the bottom of the third and the Warriors got the run back in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth the Skyhawks scored six times to take a 7-5 lead. Point had five hits in the inning and the Warriors walked four.

In the seventh the Warriors needed a pair of runs to force extras. Alyssa Mendoza led off with a single, followed by a double from Sweatt. Both runners scored in the inning as the game headed to extras.

Neither team was able to score in the eighth as the game saw the introduction of the international tiebreaker, placing a runner on second to begin the inning.  The Warriors scored a run in the 9th and 10th frames which were matched by Point.

In the 11th, the Warriors finally came through as Sweatt doubled again followed by a double from Fela. Two batters later Wilber singled as the Warriors scored three times. Point added a run in the bottom of the inning and had the winning run at the plate but Hunter Hoskins capped off a solid relief outing by stranding the runners and giving the Warriors their fourth straight win.

Hoskins pitched six innings of relief allowing eight hits and three runs – none earned. The freshman walked one and struck out three to pick up her first win and improve to 1-0.
