Warriors Fall to Chowan 1-0 in NCCAA South Region Championship

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Southern Wesleyan men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Chowan in the championship game of the NCCAA South Region on Saturday afternoo at Columbia International. Southern Wesleyan won its first round match against Bob Jones 5-2 on Thursday night and moves to 11-7-2 on the season. Chowan moves to 11-7-3 on the season and earned an automatic berth to the NCCAA national championship. 

"I'm very disappointed with the result of the game," said Camilo Rodriguez, the Warriors' head coach. "I have to give credit to Chowan. They took advantage of their opportunities. I am very proud of seniors, especially, and I wish we could have gone a little further for them! We will really miss them."

Southern Wesleyan outshot the Hawks 22-6 and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Christian Taylor, a sophomore midfielder, took six of the shots for Southern Wesleyan while Ivan Malagon added five shots. Ruben Rodriguez, the senior goalkeeper, played 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves. 

Terrell Williamson scored the lone goal of the game, giving the Hawks the 1-0 lead. Williamson was the beneficiary of a nice pass from teammate Ben Chapman and fired a shot that hit the cross bar and fell in past Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, Fernando Posada, and Michel Herszenhout were named to the All-Tourmament team. Rodriguez, Posada, Herszenhout and Malagon were named to the All-Region team and Rodriguez was named the NCCAA South Region Coach of the Year!

The Warriors will await word on an at large bid to the NCCAA national championship.
