Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Southern Wesleyan men's soccer team picked up a win in its first game of the NCCAA regional held at Columbia International University. Five different players scored to give the Warriors a 5-2 win over Bob Jones University. Southern Wesleyan is now 11-6-2 on the season and will play the winner of No. 4 seed Chowan and top seeded Emmanuel Saturday at 3 p.m. in the region championship. The winner of the region advances to nationals.
"I'm very happy with tonight's win," said head coach Camilo Rodriguez. "We played well on a very difficult pitch. I'm glad we were able to score some good goals and I hope we can correct some little things before Saturdays match."
In the 21st minute Christian Taylor scored the first goal of the game. The keeper was out of position and allowed Taylor to net an easy goal, his seventh on the year. Four minutes later the keeper was again caught out of position as Ivan Malagon passed the ball to teammate Michel Herszenhout for an easy goal. The goal was the ninth of the year for Herszenhout, the leading scorer on the Southern Wesleyan team. In the 37th minute Malagon would net a goal of his own as a hard shot by Abraham Arredondo richocheted off the post right to Malagon who finished. The goal was Malagon's fifth of the season.
The Bruins would counter with one goal before the half and another in the 60th minute to cut the lead to 3-2. But, the Warriors would again extend the lead as Marcelo Vargas capitalized on a defensive mistake that gave him an open shot for his fourth goal of the year. In the 74th minute SWU midfielder Juan Agudelo would stretch the lead to two goals as he scored off a pass from Taylor.
Southern Wesleyan outshot Bob Jones 31-8 in the contest and had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Ruben Rodriguez played the entire match and recorded four saves.
