Warriors Defeat Converse 3-0, Go 2-0 on the Weekend

CENTRAL, S.C. - The Southern Wesleyan Warriors won their second match in 18 hours, defeating the Converse Valkyries in straight sets on Saturday afternoon after downing Limestone 3-0 on Friday night. The Warriors took down the Valkyries 25-10, 25-10, 25-15 in their second of four consecutive home games to move to 12-4 on the season and remain a perfect 7-0 in Conference Carolinas. The Warriors have won seven matches in a row and all but one of those matches (a 3-1 win at Barton) have been in straight sets. Converse falls to 3-11 overall and 0-7 in conference play. 

"It was great to get some deserving freshman into the match today," said head coach Julia Reininga. "I was pleased with our play this entire weekend. We are working hard to get better each week and it's really coming to fruition."

Hitting was the story of the match as the Warriors had three players (with atleast five attack attempts) hit over .500% as Kendall Vallancourt had a perfect game with five kills on five attempts with no errors, Sarah Hughey hit .652% with only one error and Shelby Sheets hit .5000. 

In the first set the Warriors hit .600 while holding the Valkyries to -.111. Milica Stamenic started the game off with five straight kills and forced a Converse timeout. SWU would stretch the lead to 10-3 and 17-7 and with a 20-10 lead Holly Richardson served the Warriors to the next five points to seal the set. 

In the second set Southern Wesleyan hit an astonishing .714 while the Valkyries hit just .087. The Warriors again started off hot, taking the first seven points and forcing another Converse timeout. SWU would stretch the lead to 12-2 and 19-5 before forcing another timeout from the Converse bench. The Warriors would wrap up the set 25-10. 

SWU hit .355 in the third set to the Valkyries -.030. SWU again took a 7-0 lead to force a timeout from Converse. SWU would stretch leads to 9-4, 14-7, 19-11 and eventually win 25-15. 

Sarah Hughey led the offensive attack with 16 kills while senior Megan Widener added 34 assists. Stamenic contribted 10 digd and the team racked up three blocks and eight aces in the win. 

The Warriors again have almost a week off and return to the courts Friday Oct. 9 against Emmanuel at 7 p.m. before taking on Erskine at 1 p.m.
