Malagon's Goal in Double Overtime Lifts Warriors to 1-0 Win over Mt. Olive

MT. OLIVE, N.C. - Ivan Malagon scored his fourth goal of the season in the 106th minute to propel the Southern Wesleyan men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory on the road on Sunday afternoon. With the win the Warriors improve to 6-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Conference Carolinas while the Trojans fall to 7-4 and 5-2 in conference play. 

"Tonight's win was great," said head coach Camilo Rodriguez. "I'm so proud of our boys! We played against a very solid team and we are pleased with the result. We hope we can carry this momentum over into our game on Tuesday." 

The game was evenly matched in a defensive effort. In the 106th minute Sebastian Castro served a pass into the box to Malagon who beat the Trojans' keeper one-on-one to give the Warriors the game winning goal. Belmont Abbey had the advantage in shots 15-9, though both teams earned five corner kicks. Ruben Rodriguez added seven saves in the win and now has 45 on the season. 

After having over a week off coming into today's matchup, the Warriors have a quick turn around, playing at Columbia International on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Warriors return home on Saturday, Oct. 17 against Belmont Abbey. The Southern Wesleyan women's team plays at 3 p.m. and the men's game follows at 5 p.m.
