MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Three players scored in double figures highlighted by Cameron Solomon's 20, but the Warriors couldn't keep pace with No. 24 Mount Olive in a 82-68 defeat on Wednesday night.
SWU's lone lead in the game came early, at 17:08 to play in the first half, on a Kenny Holmes three pointer to put the Warriors up 3-2. From there the Trojans scored the next eight points to go up 10-3. A Skyler Moss layup at the 13:44 mark pulled the Warriors back within six but the Trojans scored the next seven to go up 23-10.
UMO shot nearly 57 percent (17 of 30) from the floor in the first half and 53 percent (34 of 64) for the game. SWU shot 41 percent (21 of 51) overall but just 37 percent (9 of 24) in the first half. The Warriors made just 2 of 7 from long range, both coming from the hand of Kenny Holmes who was 2 of 5 from distance in the game.
The Warriors did the bulk of their work at the free throw line, taking 34 attempts at the charity stripe. SWU shot 70 percent from the line, making 24 attempts. Mount Olive made just 9 of 18 from the free throw line. The Trojans held a 48-30 advantage in the paint and scored 19 points on 16 SWU turnovers. The Warriors managed just four points off of eight UMO turnovers.
Cameron Solomon led all scorers with 20 points but struggled shooting at just a 6 of 16 clip. The senior added five rebounds and two steals. Solomon made 8 of 13 from the free throw line. Holmes added 17 points on 5 of 12 shooting and grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists.
Buster Walker added 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting and made all four free throw attempts. Dwayne Bryant nearly recorded a double double with nine points and 10 rebounds. He also led the team with five assists.
The Trojans will make a return trip to Tysinger on Feb. 11. The Warriors will open a four-game home stand on Saturday as Lees-McRae makes a return trip. The Warriors defeated the Bobcats 79-78 in Banner Elk back in November.
