CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan men's basketball snapped a 10-game losing streak on Saturday, defeating Belmont Abbey 88-79 in Tysinger Gymnasium.
Four players scored in double digits as Cameron Solomon led all players with 29 points as the Warriors won for the first time since Dec. 6. Buster Walker added 20 points as Kenny Holmes scored 15, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists.
Neither team was able to grasp the upper hand early in the first half as all six ties and 10 lead changes occur in the first 13 minutes. Over the final 27 minutes the Warriors never gave up the lead after a triple from Kenny Holmes put the Warriors on top 29-27.
SWU was able to pull away slightly in the early stages of the second half, building a 12-point advantage at 49-37 on another three from Holmes 2:59 into the second half. The Crusaders battled back though, scoring the next seven points to close to within five.
A jumper from Darius Sharpe ended the run for the Warriors, two of his 12 points. That jumper started a run of six straight from Sharpe. The final basket was a four-point play which Sharpe converted to put the Warriors up 55-46.
The Crusaders again made a run, cutting the deficit to three at 55-52 with a 6-0 spurt. A layup from Solomon ended the run but not the momentum for Belmont Abbey. The Crusaders kept close the rest of the way, even when the Warriors pushed the lead back to 10 at 67-57 the Crusaders had an answer. A quick 7-0 run brought Belmont Abbey back within three.
Finally the Warriors were able to get some distance as SWU scored nine of the next 12 points to go ahead 76-67 with 3:26 to play. SWU made 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch and added a breakaway dunk from Walker to seal the game.
The Warriors shot 51.8 percent from the floor and connected on 9 of 17 (52.9 percent) from long range. The Crusaders made just 39.1 percent from the floor in the contest and 10 of 36 (27.8 percent) from downtown.
Both teams shot well from the free throw line, the Warriors making 21 of 27 and the Crusaders knocking down 19 of 26.
Belmont Abbey pulled down 18 offensive rebounds but managed just 12 second chance points. The Warriors netted 14 offensive boards but were more efficient, converting those into 22 second chance points. SWU also was successful in the lane, scoring 38 points in the paint.
The Warriors are back in action on Tuesday at home, facing off with North Greenville for the first time this season at 7:30 p.m.
