Newberry Downs Warriors in Season Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan men's tennis opened the season on Friday with an 8-1 loss to Newberry at Nettles Park.

The top of the Warriors lineup proved formidable against the Wolves as Camilo Sandoval picked up the lone win at No. 1 singles. The sophomore defeated Fernando Espana in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Sandoval and new partner Keegan Barkley dropped No. 1 doubles to Espana and Fernando Tous in a tiebreak. The Wolves duo pulled out an 8-7 (9-7) win in the longest doubles match of the day.

Barkley also had a good showing in singles action, forcing Tous to a third set at No. 2 singles. Tous pulled out a 10-7 win in the third after taking the first 6-2. Barkley won the second set 6-4 to force the third.

At No. 3 singles Loic Delaby was able to win three games off of Angel Pizzaro as Pizzaro won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. The Wolves held the Warriors to just five game wins in the bottom half of singles.

In doubles Loic Delaby and Matthew Plummer were defeated 8-2 at the second spot. In the third doubles match the Wolves duo of Richard Zeh and Marko Sekulic defeated Jacob Chesney and Alex Ballenger 8-2.

The Warriors have a quick turnaround as they make the short trip down to Anderson to take on the Trojans at 11 a.m.
