WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Southern Wesleyan volleyball got off to another slow start in the morning session of the Northwood Hardwood Classic for the second straight day, falling to Roosevelt 3-0.
The Warriors (1-2) dropped Friday's morning match 3-1 to St. Thomas before bouncing back to win in three over Florida College in the afternoon session. SWU will look to do the same today as they play Northwood at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon to close out the weekend.
SWU's offense never really got on track as the Warriors hit .127 for the match while Roosevelt came in at a .333 clip. Cherilyn Ramsey and Sarah Hughey led the Warriors with nine kills each while Jacinta Hoffpauir added seven and Alysia Cruell chipped in with five. Hughey also added nine digs and three total blocks while Milica Stamenic added nine digs.
A five-point run from Roosevelt broke open a 9-9 tie in the first set as the Warriors tried to play catch up the rest of the way but the Lakers closed out the set with three straight points to win 25-18. In the second set the Warriors led by three midway through at 16-13 but a 4-0 run from the Lakers turned the tide. The teams traded points until SWU took the advantage with three straight points. Roosevelt wasn't done though as they reeled off four straight to win the set 25-21.
Roosevelt seized control in the third, jumping out to a 9-5 lead and kept the Warriors at arm's length the entire time. The lead grew to 18-9 before the Lakers closed out the sweep at 25-15.
