WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Warriors finally got the offense on track in the fourth match of the weekend, sweeping Northwood in their finale of the Northwood Hardwood Classic 25-10, 25-21, 25-10.
SWU jumped out to a big 12-4 advantage in set one as four different players came up with the first four kills in the set. Cherilyn Ramsey had six of her match-high 14 kills in the first set including three in the first seven SWU points. The Warriors led by as much as 22-9 before closing out the set with three straight, fittingly with Ramsey providing the final point with a kill off an assist from Megan Widener.
Widener added 37 more assists to finish the weekend with 138, 10.62 per set. In addition to Ramsey's 14 kills on 31 attacks against Northwood, the senior racked up 17 digs to notch her first double-double of the season. Jacinta Hoffpauir added 12 kills and hit .357 for the match. Hoffpauir did most of her damage in the second set, picking up six kills.
Sarah Hughey also did most of her work in the second set with five of her nine kills coming in the second. The redshirt-sophomore also had half of her 16 digs in the second set.
The second set was the closest of the three but early on it looked like another easy victory for the Warriors. A late rally by Northwood cut into an 18-11 SWU lead to 21-20. After a timeout from the Warriors, Hughey added a kill to provide some relief. An attack error from Northwood really turned the tide and as SWU took two of the final three points, capped off by a kill from Widener.
In the third set the Warriors wasted little time in assuring everyone that the match would end in three. SWU took the first seven points and jumped out to a commanding 18-4 lead as Northwood hit negative .219 for the set with just one kill. Ramsey tacked on five kills in the set as the Warriors hit .286.
For the match SWU hit a weekend-best .265 with 45 kills on 44 assists. Their .438 attack percentage in the first set was a season-best so far.
Sarah Hughey was named to the all-tournament team after collecting 48 kills in four matches and hitting .276. She also 52 digs and 15 blocks in 13 sets.
