GREENVILLE, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan men's soccer scored early and often en route to a bounce-back resounding victory over Bob Jones University 6-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors bounced back after a surprising 2-1 loss on Thursday to open the season against St. Andrews. Alejandro Sanchez got things started with his first goal of the season in the 6th minute, scoring off a beautiful build up off of the feet of Bruno Liozzi and Ivan Malagon. Sanchez added another goal in the 73rd minute that pushed the lead to 4-0 and then assisted on the fifth goal of the match.
Junior Joey Capone also found the back of the net on two occasions and added an assist. Capone scored the second goal of the match in the 32nd minute as Liozzi picked up his second assist and Sebastian Castro added his first of his young career. Liozzi added a goal to go along with his two assists as Noel Fischer got credit with the assist in the 60th minute that made the game 3-0.
Jonathan Ruiz added a goal just seconds before the final horn as the Warriors completed their largest margin of victory since defeating Point University 7-1 way back on Sept. 5, 2012. SWU took 21 shots on Saturday and put 16 on target as BJU keeper Joseph Wooster was forced to make 10 saves. Ruben Rodriguez notched his first shutout of the season for the Warriors and the eighth of his career.
The Warriors return home for a three-game home stand that begins on Wednesday Sept. 10 as they host Laurel University out of High Point, N.C. That contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
