SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan volleyball won their fifth straight match on Saturday, defeating Claflin and Columbia to finish off a 4-0 weekend at the Converse College Tournament.
The Warriors swept Claflin to win their fourth straight match 3-0, defeating the Panthers 25-14, 25-15, 25-16. SWU then went the distance against Columbia in a matchup of the two undefeated teams of the tournament, defeating the Fighting Koalas 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9. The Warriors defeated Columbia 3-0 in two matches last year.
Claflin Match
Sarah Hughey led the Warriors with 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage as the Warriors were above .300 as a team for the second straight match at .366. Cherilyn Ramsey and Alysia Cruell each had seven digs as Claflin struggled offensively to just a .063 hitting percentage.
The Warriors came out of the blocks a little slow, slow in comparison to the rest of the match, with a .261 attack in the first set. They then followed that with a .500 clip in the second set with 11 kills on just 20 attacks and only one error. SWU finished off the set with 13 kills and a .357 attack in the third.
Hughey recorded double-digit kills for the fifth time in seven matches and hit over .400 for the third straight match. She also had three total blocks in the match to lead the team.
Megan Widener recorded 23 assists and six service aces to along with three kills and two digs. Courtney O'Brien added six digs, five assists and two kills as Ramsey and Jacinta Hoffpauir added six kills each.
Columbia Match
For the first time this season the Warriors won a match in more than three sets, defeating Columbia in five. This was just the second time in eight matches that the match wasn't decided in three after the Warriors lost their season opener last weekend in four.
Three players posted double-doubles as Sarah Hughey matched a season-high with 17 kills. Cherilyn Ramsey posted 11 kills and 13 digs while Megan Widener added 35 assists and 11 digs. She also added five aces and five digs.
Jacinta Hoffpauir had a season-high of 14 kills and Alysia Cruell added 12 as four Warriors reached double-digits in kills. SWU tallied 62 kills including 18 in the second set, their best offensively output of the match where they hit .333.
The Warriors hit .255 for the match while Columbia came in at a .287 clip. They were led by Caylee Antilley's 20 kills and 13 digs.
Courtney O'Brien led all players with 16 digs as SWU racked up 69 total digs. O'Brien also added 12 assists to notch her first double-double. She added three aces and two kills to cap off an all-around effort.
The Warriors will hit the road again on Tuesday to take on Lander University in their first non-tournament match at 7 p.m.
