SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan volleyball picked up a pair of wins in the Converse College Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Warriors defeated St. Andrews 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-9) before taking down Conference Carolinas foe Barton 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-23) in a non-conference match. The Warriors (4-2) had an impressive offensive attack with a .274 attack percentage against St. Andrews and hit a .360 clip against Barton.
St. Andrews Match
The Warriors warmed up from a .184 attack to a .455 clip in defeating the Knights in straight sets. St. Andrews hit negative .111 in the third set and .000 for the match. Sarah Hughey and Cherilyn Ramsey did the most damage for the Warriors with 13 and 11 kills respectively. Alysia Cruell added eight and Jacinta Hoffpauir chipped in with five.
Ramsey posted a double-double with 10 digs and also had four total blocks. Courtney O'Brien led the floor defense with 11 digs and also had nine assists. Megan Widener tallied 23 assists and also had two service aces and three total blocks.
The Warriors took the first four points in the first set and built a 13-8 lead before withstanding a SAU rally where they cut the lead down to two at 20-18. The Warriors won the final two points as Ramsey provided kills on both points to hold on to win 25-22.
SWU took nine of 10 points to turn an 11-9 deficit into an 18-12 lead and took off for the 25-19 win. After dropping the first point in the third set the Warriors won four straight and then took 10 of 11 to build an impressive 14-4 lead as they breezed by, 25-9.
Barton Match
Sarah Hughey led all players with 16 kills and Cherilyn Ramsey added 11 as the Warriors hit a season best .360 in the match. Ramsey also led the team with 12 digs, her second double-double of the day and third straight match.
Tori Wanner and Courtney O'Brien each had 10 digs as the team brought up 53 balls on the day, forcing Barton into a .100 hitting percentage. Megan Widener racked up 34 assists as Alysia Curell added nine kills. Jacinta Hoffpauir chipped in with seven kills.
Hughey's 16 kills are one shy of her season-high of 17 set last weekend. Both Ramsey and Hughey have been in double digits with kills in four of the six matches including three matches were they both had double digits in the same match.
The Warriors will close out the weekend with two more matches at Converse on Saturday, taking on Claflin at 1 p.m. followed by Columbia (S.C.) at 3 p.m.
