Softball season ends in SSAC Tourney

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Southern Wesleyan's softball season came to a close on Friday at the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament as the Warriors lost to No. 21 Brenau 7-6.  The Warriors lost on Thursday to Mobile 2-1.

It was another close game for SWU in the SSAC softball tournament and another one that didn't go the Warriors' way.  SWU led 3-2 after the third and scored three more times in the fourth but the Golden Tigers answered with four in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 6-6.  A run off of three singles in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference in the game.

The Warriors scored first in the top of the first as Lizzie Fela hit a sacrifice fly to score Savannah Carpenter.  Carpenter reached on a leadoff single and was move to third on a sac bunt from M.C. Garrett and a single from Allison Barbee.

Brenau countered with two runs in the bottom of the first, scoring on a bases loaded wild pitch and later a sacrifice fly.  The Warriors threatened in the second with three singles but left the bases loaded without crossing the plate.

In the third SWU came through with four hits – they ended the game with 16 – as Callie Wayne doubled to score Fela and Katie Jacoby brought home Wayne with a single.  Six Warriors had at least two hits as Fela picked up three and also scored twice.

The Warriors added on to their 3-2 lead with three runs in the fourth.  After Barbee singled and Fela doubled, Ashleigh Wilbur knocked in a run with a single to center.  Fela and Wilbur both scored on an error one batter later.

That lead didn't hold up as the Golden Tigers scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 6-6.  The Warriors escaped further damage in the inning, turning a triple play with the bases loaded as Fela snagged a line drive, stepped on third and threw to first to end the inning.

Brenau took the lead in the sixth, picking up three hits in the inning.  The Warriors had another chance in the seventh with two on and two out but a pop up ended the game.

The Warriors finish the year at 19-32.
