Wayne's pitching performance leads Warriors to split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan softball salvaged a split with future Conference Carolina rival North Greenville on Wednesday with a 2-0 win in game two.  The Crusaders took the first game 8-5 with a 7th inning rally.

The Warriors will hit the road this weekend to battle No. 10 Spring Hill on Friday and Mobile – who is receiving votes in the NAIA poll – on Saturday in SSAC action.

Game One
A three-run seventh propelled North Greenville to an 8-5 win in game one after the teams traded leads early in the game.  The Warriors jumped on top in the bottom of the first as Allison Barbee belted her fourth homer of the season, a two-run bomb after M.C. Garrett singled before the blast.

The Warriors tacked on two more in the third to push the lead to 4-1.  Katie Jacoby came through with the run-producing hit, picking up an RBI in the process.  Another run scored on an ensuing error after Jacoby's single.

North Greenville got those two runs back in the top of the fourth as Jenn Jacoby walked three in the inning and gave up a double.  The Crusaders took the lead for the first time in the fifth – albeit briefly – scoring two more.  The Warriors tied the game at 5-5 with a run in the bottom of the fifth as Lizzie Fela doubled home Garrett who had reached on an error.

In the seventh NGU doubled and singled with one out to take the lead and tacked on two more to extend the lead to 8-5.  The Warriors managed to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to come up with a hit.

Game Two
SWU didn't get a hit until the fourth but they didn't need to as they scored twice in the fourth en route to a 2-0 victory in game two to salvage a split with North Greenville.

Lizzie Fela ripped the first hit for the Warriors, a single into right field and was followed by Ashleigh Wilbur's bunt attempt where all runners were safe.  The throw was made to get the lead runner in Fela but wasn't in time.  Callie Wayne followed with her own bunt and was safe as a throwing error allowed Fela to score the game's first run.  An infield single from Katie Jacoby loaded the bases and with two outs Savannah Carpenter beat out an infield single that allowed Wilbur to score.

The Warriors collected only one more hit in the game, a single from Allison Barbee to lead off the fifth, but didn't need another one as Callie Wayne shut down the Crusaders.  Wayne went the distance for the Warriors allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out five.  The win improves her season record to 6-2 while Cassi Carpenter falls to 3-5 for North Greenville with the loss in relief.
