Warriors suffer two narrow defeats

CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan softball suffered a pair of narrow defeats at the hands of SSAC rival Emmanuel.  The Lions came away with a 7-6 win in game one and a 5-4 victory in game two.

These two teams will meet up again on Tuesday in Franklin Springs.  The Warriors close out the regular season on Friday at home against Brenau.

Game One
The Warriors scored three times in the seventh including a two-run homer from Allison Barbee but it wasn't enough as the Lions won 7-6.  For Barbee it was her second home run of the game and tied her with Lizzie Fela for the team lead with seven.

SWU took the early lead with single runs in the first and third innings as M.C. Garrett on two sacrifice flies, one from Barbee and one from Fela.  Barbee finished the game with four RBI, three hits and two runs scored.
The Lions responded with a three spot in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.  Barbee got the Warriors a run closer in the sixth with a solo bomb but Emmanuel scored two more in the seventh to increase their lead to 7-3 and give them enough room to withstand the Warrior charge.  SWU had the tying run on base in Callie Wayne but a groundout ended the game.

In addition to Barbee's effort M.C. Garrett and Ashleigh Wilbur each had two hits as the Warriors piled up 10.  Jenn Jacoby took the loss for the Warriors after five innings allowing nine hits and five runs.  Leah Ritchart picked up the complete game win for Emmanuel.

Game Two
It was a similar story in game two, the Warriors jumped out to an early lead and Emmanuel chipped away to secure a 5-4 win.  SWU scored three in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead but the Lions scored one in the third and two in the fifth to take the lead.  Each team notched a run in the sixth.

Barbee was back at it early in game two with a two-run double that scored Savannah Carpenter and M.c. Garrett.  Barbee later scored on a single from Shelby Stroud as the Warriors had three hits in the inning and left three on base.

That was another theme in the game as SWU left 12 on base in the game including the tying run in the sixth and seventh innings.  In the sixth Carpenter and Garrett picked up singles and moved to second and third on a wild pitch.  Carpenter scored on a groundout by Barbee but another groundout failed to score a run and after a walk put two runners on a fly out ended the threat.  In the seventh Haley Collins doubled to left with two outs but a strikeout ended the game.

Collins and Carpenter added two hits each for the Warriors while Garrett picked up three singles.  Barbee added two more RBI and Carpenter scored twice.  Linsey Hearn picked up the win with 4.2 innings of relief while Callie Wayne went the distance for the Warriors in a losing effort.
