Box Score 1 GAFFNEY, S.C. –The Southern Wesleyan softball team got off to a rough start, losing both games in the doubleheader to Limestone, 8-0 in game one and 7-3 in game two.
The Warriors will be back in action on Friday, travelling to Milligan College and again on Saturday at Tennessee Temple.
SWU and Limestone will meet again in March in Central. The Warriors' home opener is slated for March 7 against Coastal Georgia.
Game One
The Saints jumped out to a big, early lead en route to an 8-0 win over the Warriors. Limestone scored five times in the first before adding single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Both teams collected six hits in the game but LC took advantage of six walks given up by Jenn Jacoby and the Warriors.
Limestone needed just one hit in the first inning to score five runs after five walks in the inning and an error. The lone hit came from Carissa Snyder who doubled in a run. The Warriors had a chance to score before the Saints even came to the plate in the first after M.C. Garrett walked and Lizzie Fela singled with two outs. A strikeout ended the threat and began to tell the story as the Warriors ended up leaving eight on base.
Lizzie Fela collected two of the six hits in the game for the Warriors but the Warriors were unable to get in the scoring column after leaving two on the second and three on in the fourth. Taylor Wigmore picked up the win for the Saints and Jacoby took the loss. Two of the eight runs allowed by Jacoby were unearned after an error early in the first allowed the rally to continue for Limestone.
Game Two
The Warriors got off to another rough start, allowing three runs in the first inning and two more in the second. The offense finally came alive in the seventh, scoring all three runs in the final frame after already trailing 7-0.
M.C. Garrett started the seventh with an infield single and benefited by an error one batter later, moving up to third. Lizzie Fela knocked home the first run of the season for the Warriors with a single up the middle to score Garrett. Allison Barbee scored two batters later on a groundout from Ashleigh Wilbur. Katie Jacoby produced a run with a double later in the inning.
The Saints were helped out in the first inning as the Warriors committed two errors which helped lead to three runs. Two hit batters in the second helped the Saints score two more in the second as the Warriors were unable to overcome another big, early deficit.
Limestone tacked on single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The Warriors finished the game with five hits as five different players produced. The Saints pounded out 10 hits in the game. Kelly Shearer picked up the win for Limestone and Barbee took the loss after just two innings of work.
